Making Paper vs Crayon

It started with drawing...

Ozzie and I drew hundreds of pictures.

We drew. We laughed. We made up characters. We had heaps of ideas — some good, some completely ridiculous.

Eventually, we landed on two simple characters:

Paper and Crayon.

Then we started thinking about who they were.

How would they talk?
What would make them different?
What could go wrong between them?

We started with the characters first.

We gave Paper and Crayon their own personalities and imagined how they might behave when they met.

Every good story needs something to happen.

So we thought about a problem that could get in their way — something that might also help them understand each other.

Then came the fun part.

How could they solve the problem together?

We wanted the solution to feel happy, a little silly and make people laugh.

Eventually, every story has to end.

But sometimes an ending can also be the beginning of something new.

Another idea appears.
Another problem unfolds.
Another adventure begins...

Once we had our drawings it was time to turn it into something we could actually make a book with.

With a bit of help from Dad, we jumped into Adobe Illustrator and started redrawing our sketches as artwork.

This part took a bit longer!

Ozzie helped guide how everything should look, while Dad handled some of the trickier bits on the computer.

Little by little, our rough drawings started looking like real book pages.

Then we put everything together and made our first book mock-up.

And then another one.

And another one...

We changed drawings, moved things around, fixed pages and kept testing it until it finally felt right.
